Elf BFK-07 and MA Rules for Pump Fuel

10 November 2009

Direct from MA website: www.ma.org.au

Pump fuel

Generally speaking, fuel must be purchased from retail petrol pumps of commercial fuel suppliers. Additives must not be used, other than those specified in the relevant discipline chapters of the Manual of Motorcycle Sport.

Other fuels

Other fuels may not be used, unless they are homolgated by Motorcycling Australia under GCR 12.9

12.9.5 Homologation of Fuel

12.9.5.1 Unleaded fuel produced by an oil company for sale in the Australian general transport fuel market through retail petrol pumps in at least 3 states does not have to be homologated.

WHY IS ELF BFK-07 A PUMP FUEL?

Generally speaking, fuel must be purchased from retail petrol pumps of commercial fuel suppliers”

Elf BFK-07 can be purchased from retail petrol pumps, we have a site in TAS, VIC, QLD, NSW and NT retailing BFK-07 from retail petrol pumps. The board of directors of MA have photo’s taken in the past seven days of our Elf BFK-07 retail pumps in VIC, QLD and NSW.

Fuel Quality Management in Canberra (The Government) agrees that Elf BFK-07 meets the Australian Government standards for petrol (Fuel Standard (Petrol) determination 2001)

As an interesting sidenote, the ACCC has already ruled in favor of Elf when the definition of retail petrol pumps, pump fuel and Elf BFK-07 was debated at length.

WHY IS ELF BFK-07 NOT HOMOGATED BY MOTORCYCLING AUSTRALIA

As detailed above, Elf BFK-07 fits well within the existing rule for “Pump Fuel” according to the MA fuel rules.

CAMS and the AKA do not expect Elf BFK-07 to be homologated.

The homologation fee of $1000 per year is unreasonable based on Elf BFK-07 clearly meeting MA’s definitions for Pump Fuel.

Another interesting sidenote is that no other fuel has ever been homologated by MA. Why do the other fuel suppliers not see the need to homologate their fuels?

MA’s homogation fuel rule suggests that Elf BFK-07 does not need to be homologated:

12.9.5.1 Unleaded fuel produced by an oil company for sale in the Australian general transport fuel market through retail petrol pumps in at least 3 states does not have to be homologated.”

1, Unleaded fuel = yes
2, Produced by an oil company = yes
3, For sale in Australia general transport fuel market = yes
4, through retail petrol pumps in at least 3 states = yes

1, Elf BFK-07 is unleaded fuel
2, Elf BFK-07 is produced by TOTAL, the fourth largest oil company in the world
3, Elf BFK-07 is compliant to the Australian Government standards for petrol (Fuel Standard (Petrol) determination 2001)
4, Elf BFK-07 is available from retail bowsers in QLD, VIC, NT, TAS & NSW
